Driving Innovation in Peptide Synthesis: Highlights from the Peptide User Group Symposium 2024

The Peptide User Group Symposium 2024, held at the Bio21 Molecular Science & Biotechnology Institute, was a hub for researchers and industry leaders to discuss advancements in peptide synthesis. Jelica and Aaron from John Morris Group, the exclusive distributor for CEM Corporation in Australia, engaged with researchers to explore how CEM's innovative solutions are transforming peptide synthesis workflows.

Showcasing CEM Corporation's Peptide Synthesis Solutions

CEM Corporation is a global leader in laboratory technologies, and its peptide synthesis solutions are designed to meet the evolving needs of modern research. At the symposium, we demonstrated the following cutting-edge products:

Automated and Manual Microwave Synthesis

CEM’s microwave synthesis systems revolutionise peptide production, delivering faster reaction times and higher purity. Whether laboratories require automation for efficiency or manual control for precision, these systems adapt seamlessly to diverse workflows. The Discover 2.0® is the premier microwave reactor for performing solution-phase synthetic chemistry and features a 900 W installed magnetron, iWave® in-situ and volume-independent IR temperature control (up to 300 °C), automated pressure management with Activent® (up to 435 psi), ability to run pressurized reactions in 10, 35, and 100mL vessels (no tools required), ability to run reflux reactions using standard glassware, a large and easy-to-access cavity with protective spill cup, variable electromagnetic stirring, a compressed air port for rapid post-synthesis cooling, an integrated 10.1" touchscreen with intuitive software, and communication ports for accessories.

Auto Parallel Synthesis

For researchers handling high-throughput peptide synthesis, CEM’s auto parallel synthesis systems offer unparalleled productivity. This technology allows for the simultaneous synthesis of multiple peptides, saving valuable time and resources. The MultiPep 2™ system (formerly MultiPep RSi) is an automated multiple peptide synthesizer based on a pipetting robot operated by dedicated PC software. The synthesis scale on-resin varies from 1-500 µmol, depending on the synthesis module used. The system can also be used for automated synthesis of membrane-bound peptide arrays. The chemistry is optimized for Fmoc-based peptide synthesis with activation by HBTU/NMM or a similar protocol. A single probe picks up reagents and distributes them to the wells of the reaction module.

Razor - Rapid Cleavage for Peptide Synthesis

The Razor simplifies the peptide cleavage process with rapid and efficient performance. This innovative tool ensures high-quality results while significantly reducing processing time, enabling researchers to focus on analysis and applications. Capable of simultaneously cleaving up to 12 different peptides at an elevated temperature. The Razor features an integrated washing station and completes peptide cleavage in only 30 minutes with isolated valve control for independent draining of any vessel at any time. Achieves higher purity and better peptide yield than room temperature cleavage for difficult sequences.

Engaging with the Research Community

The symposium was a valuable opportunity to learn directly from researchers and discuss their challenges in peptide synthesis. Key takeaways included:

  • A growing demand for flexible and scalable synthesis systems.
  • Appreciation for the time-saving features of microwave-assisted synthesis and rapid cleavage.
  • Interest in integrating automated and manual options for versatile research capabilities.
